Extremely rare spotless giraffe born in Tennessee

TENNESSEE: Brights zoo, located in northwestern Tennessee, has witnessed one of the rarest occurrences in the animal kingdom. It has welcomed a spotless giraffe calf.

This extraordinary occurrence has captured the attention of visitors and animal enthusiasts worldwide.

David Bright, one of the zoo’s owners, said in interviews that such plain brown spotless giraffes are exceptionally uncommon. Genetic anomalies like this are extremely rare, both in the wild and in captivity. Historical records indicate only a few similar cases, with one in Tokyo in 1972 and two others prior to that.

Giraffes in their natural habitat rely on their distinctive spots for camouflage, aiding them in blending seamlessly with their surroundings. This intriguing birth has intrigued scientists, who are considering the possibility of albinism or vitiligo in giraffes – conditions that can lead to pigmentation absence.

Brights Zoo chose an unconventional route to raise awareness about this exceptional birth and promote giraffe conservation. Although zoos typically don’t publicise newborn animals, they recognised that this unique giraffe could symbolize the urgency of safeguarding giraffe populations in their natural environment.

The giraffe population in Africa has significantly declined over the past decades, with around 117,000 remaining today compared to 155,000 in the 1980s, according to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation. Nevertheless, conservation efforts are yielding positive results, according to Stephanie Fennessy, the foundation’s Director.

The public is encouraged by Brights Zoo to participate by suggesting names for the extraordinary calf. Options include Kipekee (unique), Firali (unusual), Shakiri (most beautiful), and Jamella (great beauty). Voting for the name will continue until September 4, with the chosen name announcement to follow.

Beyond naming suggestions, the zoo is urging generosity through donations to support giraffe conservation initiatives. Their objective is to ensure future generations have the privilege of experiencing the majesty of these magnificent creatures in the wild.
