Murree long-awaited snowfall finally approaches

ISLAMABAD: Murree and its picturesque hill stations are on the brink of welcoming the season’s first snowfall after a year of eager anticipation, according to the latest weather forecast.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued precautionary directives in preparation for the anticipated heavy snowfall. The forecast indicates that snowfall is set to commence on Tuesday morning, transforming the climate in Murree, Galyat, and adjacent areas into a wintry landscape, with temperatures expected to plummet after rain and snowfall.

In light of the tragic events that unfolded in January 2022, claiming 22 lives due to a snowstorm that stranded many on Murree’s roads, the PDMA spokesperson assured that authorities are diligently working to avert any untoward situations. The catastrophe was attributed to the negligence of local authorities who allowed an excessive number of vehicles into Murree, surpassing its maximum capacity of 4,000 vehicles.

To prevent a recurrence of such risks, the Murree administration has proactively implemented measures. “Last week, three facilitation centres for tourists were established, and this number has now been increased to 13. The emphasis is on ensuring the safety of visitors, especially those arriving in their vehicles,” stated the spokesperson.

Highlighting the commitment to avoid repeating past mistakes, the spokesperson underscored the significance of responsible management and adherence to capacity limits to safeguard both tourists and residents in the scenic hill station.

Meanwhile, a surge in visitors, predominantly families from various districts of central Punjab and northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, was noted in the valleys of Kalam, Madain, Bahrain, and Malam Jabba in Upper Swat. This influx coincided with light to moderate rains and snowfall, leading to a noticeable dip in temperatures.
