ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan cricket team faces a significant setback as vice-captain and all-rounder Shadab Khan is likely to miss the upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand in January. The 25-year-old sustained a foot injury during the National T20 Cup and has been on the sidelines since.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is now on the lookout for a suitable replacement for Shadab Khan, with the squad announcement for the New Zealand tour scheduled for December 25. The PCB’s selection committee, featuring Wahab Riaz, Kamran Akmal, Asad Shafiq, and Iftikhar Anjum, will convene in the coming days to assess potential candidates, giving preference to standout performers from the National T20 Cup.

Currently engaged in a three-match Test series in Australia as part of the World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle, the Pakistan cricket team is set to conclude their Test campaign on January 7. With just a five-day turnaround, Pakistan is slated to kick off their T20I series against New Zealand on January 12.

Following Babar Azam’s resignation as the captain across all formats, Shaheen Shah Afridi assumes the leadership role for the T20Is. The talented bowler, known for his prowess with the new ball, will lead the team in the first T20I against the 2021 T20 World Cup runners-up.
