Permanent arrest warrants issued for Azam Swati

ISLAMABAD: The Special Judge Central Islamabad has issued permanent arrest warrants for Azam Swati, a leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, in connection with a case involving controversial tweets.

Despite being declared a proclaimed offender (PO), Azam Swati has repeatedly failed to appear in court, prompting the issuance of these warrants. The court had previously initiated proceedings to declare Swati a PO.

Judge Shah Rukh Arjumand, in the issuance of the warrants, directed the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to apprehend and present the suspect whenever and wherever he is located.

PTI leaders booked for false campaign against state institutions on social media

On May 30, 2023, a special court in Islamabad had previously issued non-bailable arrest warrants for Azam Swati at the request of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) after he failed to appear for indictment in the controversial tweets case.

Swati’s legal representative informed the court that he had lost contact with his client and opposed the Special Prosecutor Rizwan Abbasi’s plea for non-bailable arrest warrants against the PTI leader.

However, the FIA’s lawyer asserted that Swati’s non-appearance before the court appeared to be intentional, leading to the subsequent issuance of the warrants.
