KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) has requested a report from the provincial government and the DIG Traffic to tackle the problem of illegal parking in Karachi.
A hearing at the SHC addressed the issue of unauthorized parking fees and illegal parking, involving the advocate of KMC and the petitioner.
The petitioner’s advocate highlighted the prevalent problem of double parking in Karachi, prompting the court to ask for specific locations with high instances of double parking.
The lawyer stated during the proceedings that both the District Municipal Corporation (DMC) and Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) have been actively providing parking facilities. However, the court expressed concerns about the regulation and permission of double parking within the city, questioning how such practices were allowed by KMC and DMC.
The court also questioned the purpose of a parking plaza, expressing dissatisfaction with its condition. The KMC lawyer clarified that the parking plaza falls under the jurisdiction of the Karachi Development Authority (KDA).
Emphasising the substantial investment in the parking plaza’s construction, the court queried its underutilization.
The issue of motorcycle parking fees was brought up, with the petitioner pointing out that while the fee was fixed at Rs10, illegal parties were charging Rs30 for motorcycle parking.
The court urged the Sindh government’s lawyer to identify specific locations with illegal parking and demonstrated a readiness to address the matter. The hearing was adjourned until September 26 for further examination.
