PTI leader detained outside RO’s office; nephew alleges complicity

NANKANA SAHIB: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Rana Jamil Hassan Khanwas taken into police custody from outside the Returning Officer’s (RO) office in Nankana Sahib.

Khan has been arrested for his alleged role in May 9 case. Reportedly, he had been summoned to verify his signatures for the upcoming general elections scheduled for February 8 next year. Mandi Faizabad Police Station confirmed the arrest, revealing that Hassan faces charges related to the May 9 unrest, The News reported.

Advocate Sher Afzal, Rana Jamil Khan’s nephew and a prominent figure within PTI, addressed the media outside the RO’s office. He alleged that RO Rai Zulfikar orchestrated Khan’s arrest during the signature verification process. Afzal urged the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to intervene and investigate the circumstances surrounding the arrest.

“We received a call from the RO office’s official phone number for the verification of Rana Jamil Hassan’s signature,” Afzal claimed. However, RO Zulfikar said that the PTI leader was apprehended outside his office and denied knowledge of the reasons behind the arrest.

Rana Jamil Khan is set to appear in court today (Saturday). The May 9 riots resulted in at least eight fatalities and numerous injuries, prompting authorities to arrest thousands of PTI supporters.
