Pneumonia claims lives of 12 more children in Punjab

LAHORE: At least 12 more children succumbed to the pneumonia infection in the past 24 hours, taking the total death toll among children in Punjab to 220 this month, health officials said on Thursday.

According to the Punjab Health Department, one of the deceased children belonged to Lahore, while three deaths were reported from Gujranwala, two from Bahawalpur, two from Rawalpindi, and one each from Faisalabad, Sheikhupura, and Sargodha.

The department also confirmed 1,077 new cases of pneumonia in the province, including 251 children from Lahore. The total number of pneumonia cases reported in Punjab in January has reached 11,597, of which 1,821 were from Lahore.

The health officials attributed the surge in pneumonia cases and deaths to the cold weather and smog that have engulfed the province. They urged the parents to protect their children from the cold, ensure the administration of the complete course of preventive vaccines, and seek timely medical attention in case of any symptoms.

Pneumonia is a lung infection that causes inflammation of the air sacs, making it difficult to breathe. The symptoms include cough, fever, chills, and breathing difficulties. Pneumonia can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi, and can be prevented by vaccination, hygiene, and avoiding exposure to pollutants.
