ISLAMABAD: Bushra Bibi, the wife of former prime minister Imran Khan, has been issued a final show-cause notice by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Rawalpindi in connection with the Toshakhana gifts case.

The case pertains to the alleged misappropriation of state gifts from foreign dignitaries during Khan’s tenure in office.

According to the notice, Bushra Bibi received several items of jewellery, including gold and diamond necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings, worth millions of rupees and retained them against meager retention cost based on undervalued assessment.

The notice said that the gifts were not deposited in the Toshakhana, the official treasury where such gifts are stored and appraised, in contravention of the procedures. It also accused Bushra Bibi of conniving with her husband to gain pecuniary benefit from the gifted assets.

The notice further said that Bushra Bibi was directed multiple times to produce the aforementioned state gifts but she failed to comply. Therefore, she was given the last opportunity to appear along with a male family member before the NAB investigation team on December 11, 2023 for production of the gifted items.

The notice warned that in case of non-compliance, the authority may adopt coercive measures against her as provided under the provisions of the National Accountability Ordinance, 1999.

The Toshakhana gifts case is one of the several corruption cases that the NAB has filed against Imran Khan and his associates after he was ousted from power in 2022. Khan, who is currently in jail, has denied any wrongdoing and claimed that the cases are politically motivated.
