Imran Khan not presented in cipher case hearing, again

ISLAMABAD: Hearing of cipher case against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan and Vice Chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi was held at the Judicial Complex in Islamabad today.

Judge Abul Hasnat Zulqarnain presided over the case and inquired about any notification for a trial in Adiala Jail. The court staff responded that there was no notification yet. Justice Zulqarnain emphasised the importance of a jail trial notification while Barrister Taimur pointed out the absence of the accused, Imran Khan in court despite earlier orders to ensure his presence.

The judge, referring to the previous hearing’s decision, directed the counsel to review it. He asserted that if the jail receives a trial notification, it will be examined, but if not, orders for production will be issued.

The courtroom also witnessed discussions about the court’s order of November 28, leading to a brief adjournment. Lawyer Ali Bukhari raised concerns about the order’s completeness, specifically its silence on Shah Mehmood Qureshi and the reasons behind the jail trial.

As the proceedings continued, the court contemplated a date for the hearing, while the defendant’s counsel, Shoaib Shaheen, raised concerns about deciding on a date that comes post-election date.

In a related update, Imran Khan filed a petition against the jail trial order, requesting the court to implement its November 23 order. The Islamabad High Court (IHC) had declared the jail trial null and void.

The Cipher case hearing was postponed till tomorrow in the Special Court Islamabad. However, the trial is set to proceed in Adiala Jail Rawalpindi, in accordance with the received notification.
