Glamorous jury revealed for Pakistan’s Oscar submission selection

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistani Academy Selection Committee (PASC) has revealed the esteemed panel tasked with choosing Pakistan’s submission for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 2024 Oscars.

Chaired by the well-known international filmmaker Mo Naqvi, the committee boasts a diverse and talented lineup hailing from Pakistan’s media and entertainment sector.

Among the newly revealed committee members, the inclusion of renowned actors including The Legend Of Maula Jatt famed actor Fawad Khan and the Parizaad star Ahmed Ali Akbar has garnered significant attention. Both actors enjoy stellar reputations, with Khan boasting prestigious accolades such as the Lux Style and Filmfare awards.

Meanwhile, the committee includes the Waar director Bilal Lashari, and Saim Sadiq, the director of Joyland, along with the esteemed author and nominee for the Bailey Prize, Fatima Bhutto.

Furthermore, the panel’s diversity extends to legendary actress Nadia Afgan, acclaimed event director, producer, and activist Frieha Altaf, distinguished filmmaker and co-founder of the Documentary Association of Pakistan, Haya Fatima, as well as award-winning documentary filmmaker, journalist, and cultural critic Madeeha Syed. Additionally, the committee benefits from the expertise of the award-winning producer, director, and editor, Mehreen Jabbar.

Last year, Pakistan’s official submission for the Oscars Best Foreign Language Film category was the acclaimed movie Joyland, which also clinched the Cannes Jury Award at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. This submission garnered widespread acclaim across various platforms, showcasing Pakistan’s burgeoning influence on the global film industry.
