World Cup upset: Afghanistan beat England by 69 runs

WEB DESK: In a World Cup upset, Afghanistan defeated defending champions England by 69 runs on Sunday.

In pursuit of a 285-run target, England’s innings crumbled at 215 in just 40.3 overs, succumbing to the  Afghan spin attack, led by Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman, both of whom clinched three wickets each.

Afghanistan’s team was dismissed for a total of 284 runs against defending champions England. England, having won the toss, chose to field. Rahmanullah Gurbaz, the opening batsman, was the highest scorer for Afghanistan, hitting 80 runs off 57 balls before getting run out. His opening partner, Ibrahim Zadran, added 28 runs to the total during their partnership of 114 runs for the first wicket, which lasted for 16 overs.
