LAHORE: Wildlife enthusiasts in Lahore have a reason to rejoice as the Lahore Safari Zoo is set to reopen on January 31, 2024, after undergoing a major renovation.
The zoo, which was closed for three months from November 10, 2023, will adopt the Singaporean model of a wildlife park, offering visitors an immersive experience in a natural habitat.
The renovation project, which cost an estimated Rs2.6 billion, involved the introduction of 11 new wild animals, including pandas, hippos, rhinoceroses, black jaguars, and pumas. The animal enclosures were also redesigned to mimic their natural environments, ensuring their well-being and comfort.
Additionally, the project included the development of captivating attractions, such as an African safari, a desert safari, and a salt range within the Safari park. These enhancements are expected to elevate the overall visitor experience and the zoo’s status as a premier wildlife destination.
The announcement of the reopening was made by Punjab Caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi in a tweet on Friday, where he said: “Exciting news for wildlife enthusiasts! Lahore Safari Zoo is set to be open soon, adopting the Singaporean model for a thrilling wildlife park. Get ready for an immersive experience in a natural habitat – opening its doors on Jan 31, 2024 !”
The tweet was met with positive reactions from the public, who expressed their eagerness to visit the revamped zoo and see the new animals.
Some also praised the caretaker government for taking the initiative to improve the zoo and Safari park, which are among the oldest and most popular tourist attractions in Lahore.
The Lahore Safari Zoo, which was established in 1982, covers an area of 242 acres and houses more than 1,300 animals of 136 species. The zoo attracts around 3 million visitors annually, making it one of the most visited zoos in Pakistan. The zoo is also involved in various conservation and education programs, such as breeding endangered species, conducting research, and providing awareness to the public.
The reopening of the Lahore Safari Zoo is expected to boost the tourism industry in Lahore, as well as provide a source of entertainment and education for the people. The zoo authorities have also implemented an e-ticketing system for the convenience of the visitors, who can book their tickets online and avoid long queues. The zoo will be open from 9 am to 5 pm daily, with special timings for the night safari.
