General elections 2024: schools to remain close all next week

ISLAMABAD: Schools throughout the country would remain close for the entire next week on account of Kashmir Day and general elections 2024.

Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and federal directorate of education have announced that the schools will remain closed from Feburary 3 till February 11.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training: “In view of the upcoming general elections 2024 to be held in Pakistan on February 8, 2024, It has been decided to declare public holidays from February 6 to 9.”

It further said that the educational institutions in the federal capital would “reopen February 10 (Saturday)”.

The public and private schools, however, would actually remain shut from February 3 to 11. The schools observe two weekly holidays —Saturday and Sunday — hence it would remain closed on Saturday (February 3).

In addition to this, the federal government had declared February 5 (Monday) a public holiday on account of “Kashmir Solidarity Day”. The educational facilities would remain closed from February 6 to 9 due to the general elections.

Following a 9-day break, the schools would reopen on February 12 (Monday).


The Punjab government also decided to keep schools, colleges and universities across the province closed from February 6 to 9 in the backdrop of the general elections slated for February 8.

As per the Punjab cabinet, the decision would apply to public and private educational institutes both.


The Sindh Education Department has also announced the closure of all public and private educational institutions across the province from February 6 to 9 due to the forthcoming February 8 nationwide polls.

The public and private schools, colleges and universities will remain closed from February 5 to 9 – as Feb 5 has already been announced as a public holiday on account of Kashmir Day.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government also decided to keep the educational institutes closed across the province from February 6 to 9 in the light of upcoming general elections. 

A notification issued in this regard stated that all public and private school, colleges and universities in the province will be closed during the said period.

With more than 128 million voters, Pakistan is set to stage crucial elections this time around owing to the instability on the country’s political and economic fronts.

The polls are slated to be held on February 8 with heightened security and deployment of law enforcers to ensure the law and order situation across the country.
