Former FIA director-general Bashir Memon joins PML-N

ISLAMABAD: Former director-general of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Bashir Memon, has joined the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

PML-N’s chief organiser Maryam Nawaz has formed a 12-member committee in Sindh to welcome Nawaz Sharif, appointing Bashir Memon as the convener of the committee.

According to the party’s notification, the committee also includes Muhammad Zubair, Khil Das Kohistani and Nihal Hashmi.

The committee is set to ensure the participation of party workers in Nawaz Sharif’s welcome event on October 21.

Bashir Memon served from October 2018 to April 2020 as the FIA director-general.

He resigned from his post after he was allegedly asked by the PTI government and former prime minister to initiate cases against the opposition leaders, especially the PML-N.

He claimed that he was pressured to file cases against Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz, Shehbaz Sharif, and other PML-N members on charges of corruption, money laundering, and treason.

He also accused the PTI government of interfering in the FIA’s investigations and manipulating the evidence.

In an interview, Bashir Memon claimed how he was summoned by the PTI chairman at his residence and asked to file cases against the PML-N leaders.

He also said that he was offered lucrative posts and incentives to comply with the PTI government’s demands, but he refused to do so.

He also claimed how the PTI government tried to influence the FIA’s investigations into the sugar crisis, wheat crisis, and other scandals⁴.

In an conducted by Rauf Klasra on GTV News channel, Bashir Memon reiterated his allegations against the PTI government and the former prime minister.

He also claimed that he was threatened and harassed by the government officials and agencies after he resigned from his post. He also accused the PTI government of misusing the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and other institutions to target the opposition.

In a interview with journalist Murtaza Ali Shah, Bashir Memon narrated his ordeal as the FIA chief and how he faced pressure from the PTI government to implicate the opposition leaders in false cases.

He also said that he was asked to arrest Maryam Nawaz before her rally in Lahore and to file a treason case against Nawaz Sharif for his speech from London.
