Election Commission stops training of DROs, ROs

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Thursday stopped the ongoing training of District Returning Officers (DROs) and Returning Officers (ROs).

According to the spokesperson of Election Commission of Pakistan, this training has been stopped by the Election Commission as per the order of Lahore High Court (LHC).

The spokesman said that in view of the court order, the ECP has also issued a letter to the Election Commissioners of Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan on an emergency basis.

No possibility of change in ECP’s announced polls date: Solangi

Training of DROs and ROs was going on in Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar and Quetta.

It is pertinent to note that the Lahore High Court has suspended the notification of the ECP to conduct the general elections on February 8 through bureaucracy.

The court recommended the constitution of a larger bench on the petitions against holding the elections by the executive and Justice Ali Baqir Najafi sent the file to the Chief Justice.

Apart from this, yesterday, the Election Commission also banned the transfer posting of Deputy Commissioners and Additional Deputy Commissioners across the country.

Last week, the PTI challenged the appointment of bureaucrats to act ROs for the upcoming general elections and appealed to the court to strike down sections 50(1)(b) and 51(1) of the Elections Act 2017.

It argued that the appointment of ROs and other election staff from among government officers ‘defeats the whole purpose of creating an independent election commission’.

The petition requested the court to order the ECP to initiate the process of consultation with the LHC chief justice for the appointment of judicial officers as the returning officers for the general elections.
