ISLAMABAD: In the heart of Islamabad’s Blue Area, the Mihai Eminescu Monument, a poignant symbol of the enduring friendship between Pakistan and Romania, stands marred by a noticeable void.

At the centre of this architectural marvel, a main bronze pillar has inexplicably vanished, leaving behind a void that hints at a potential act of vandalism or the calculated theft orchestrated by those indifferent to the sanctity of cultural heritage.

The Mihai Eminescu Monument, a testament to the shared cultural richness of Romania and Pakistan, was inaugurated on Romania’s National Culture Day, January 15, 2004. This collaborative endeavour pays homage to the national poets of both nations, Mihai Eminescu of Romania and Mohammad Allama Iqbal of Pakistan.

The monument seamlessly blends elements of Romanian and Pakistani architecture, incorporating an Endless Column inspired by the renowned work of Constantin Brâncuși, the visionary Romanian sculptor often hailed as the father of modern architecture.
Crafted by the skilled hands of an ambitious team of students under the guidance of a distinguished Pakistani artist, the 20-foot-high monument is a harmonious blend of reinforced concrete, bronze, granite, and white marble. Its structure not only captures the essence of the two nations it represents but also stands as a unique testament to artistic collaboration and cross-cultural dialogue.

The monumental centrepiece, a large marble book, proudly displays the effigies of the revered poets, Iqbal and Eminescu, cast in bronze. Now, with the unexplained absence of the central bronze pillar, the monument’s integrity is compromised, leaving a void that echoes the uncertainty surrounding its disappearance.

The mystery surrounding the disappearance of this bronze pillar raises more questions than answers. Who orchestrated this enigmatic act, and what motivations lie behind it? Was it a deliberate act of sabotage, or the clandestine work of thieves seeking to exploit the artistic and historical significance of the monument? The shadows of uncertainty shroud the true identity of those responsible and the motives that propelled them to undertake such a brazen deed.
