KABUL: A suspected bomb explosion shook the Imam Zaman Mosque in Pol-e-Khomri, Baghlan Province, during Friday prayers, prompting immediate concerns regarding casualties.

The precise nature of the explosion remains uncertain, although preliminary reports suggest the possibility of a suicide bomber detonating within the vicinity.

While unconfirmed casualty figures have emerged, with several fatalities reported, authorities are expected to provide more accurate numbers in the coming hours.

Authorities are likely to enforce heightened security measures in the town as a response to the incident, potentially causing disruptions, such as road closures, in the vicinity of the explosion.

Mustafa Hashemi, the director of the Baghlan Information and Culture department, confirmed to TOLO News the occurrence of fatalities and injuries in the explosion. However, he said further details regarding the type of explosion and the exact casualty figures will be shared following initial assessments.

Afghanistan’s Taliban-run administration has faced an insurgency by Islamic State militants, who have claimed a series of deadly attacks on civilians, foreigners and Taliban security forces in recent months.
