ISLAMABAD: In a decisive stance, Akbar S. Babar, a founding member of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI), has unequivocally rejected the legitimacy of the intra-party elections, vowing to persist in the struggle until PTI achieves a status of transparency within its organizational framework.
“I expressed my reservations yesterday regarding the manner in which these elections were to be held, and today my reservations proved to be true,” Babar asserted, shedding light on the misgivings he had articulated in anticipation of the electoral process.
The PTI had officially announced the scheduling of its internal elections, mandated by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), to take place on December 2, as per the ECP’s directive. The electoral authority had instructed PTI to conduct intra-party elections within 20 days to retain the bat as its poll symbol.
Casting doubt on the procedural integrity of the elections, Babar remarked, “How the elections were conducted, how the results have come, are in front of everyone. They said that we asked for the voter list yesterday, which was not given to us,” underscoring a lack of transparency in the process.
Addressing the alleged violation of fundamental rights through the premature announcement of prepared results, Babar contended that those participating in the intra-party election had unwittingly exposed themselves. He also raised concerns about the manner in which the elections were purportedly held, emphasizing, “We do not recognize these intra-party elections.”
For Babar, the entire concept of intra-party elections appeared as a mockery of democracy, and he pledged to persist in the struggle until PTI transforms into an organization that upholds transparency in its functioning.
