Gerry’s faces probe over issuance of fake Covid-19 certificates in Pakistan
ISLAMABAD: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has launched an inquiry into the alleged issuance of fake Covid-19 certificates by Gerry’s to hundreds of passengers in Pakistan during the pandemic.
The FIA’s Anti-Corruption Circle Islamabad has received scores of complaints from international passengers and their families who claimed that they were given bogus coronavirus certificates by Gerry’s that cost them heavily.
The FIA has issued a notice to the top management of Gerry’s International Islamabad, asking them to explain the authority, source, and process of issuing Covid-19 certificates to passengers.
“It appears that you are acquainted with the circumstances of the subject matter, which is under probe at this circle under the FIA Act, 1974 read with Chapter XIV of the Code of the Criminal Procedure, 1898,” the FIA notice read.
Afzal Niazi, the head of the FIA investigation team, told Hum Investigation Team (HIT) that they had collected some evidence of the scam where hundreds of unauthorized certificates were issued to passengers.
“It looks like a big scam where fake and unauthorized documents have been prepared for the sake of this business….. but we are probing the matter carefully,” he said.
The FIA has sought answers to the following questions from Gerry’s management:
Under which authority was Gerry’s International authorized to issue Covid-19 certificates?
From which labs did Gerry’s International obtain and use Covid-19 certificates?
Who processed and issued Covid-19 certificates? Also provide details of employees who processed the said certificates.?
How many Covid-19 certificates were issued by Gerry’s International?
Was Gerry’s International registered under the Ministry of Health and did it have inspection reports of labs?
The FIA team directed the management to appear before the enquiry officer Inspector Zahid Bhatti along with the attested copies of the above information to record their statement on 14-12-2023 at 10:00 AM.
Zahid Bhatti, Inspector (Investigation) at FIA Anti-Corruption Circle Islamabad, is conducting the probe, officials familiar with the development told HIT.
HIT contacted Gerry’s management for their version of the story, but they did not respond till the filing of this report.
